What passed for abstract comics back in 2001

If there are any readers of this blog who still don't know that the anthology of abstract comics that I've edited is set to come out from Fantagraphics Books in June 2009, well, now you know.

Incidentally, I made my first abstract comic in the fall of 2002, and published it in my mini Blots, 2003. Now it's been reprinted in Asemic no. 5.

By an odd coincidence a post about Calpurnio (the first artist listed at that link) just went up on my blog. I'd say his work is abstracted, but not abstract...

i think yr correct in suggesting we've come a long ways in 7 years on what can truly be considered abstract comics -- we're still playing catch-up to the Europeans in a way, but yr work & dedication has been a major catalyst in how North Americans view the comics medium & the anthology will be a beautiful touchstone for how we've grown & where to go from here.
